Qatar ranked third on the list of major donor countries to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) for 2017, with Sweden at the top position followed by the European Commission. Canada is the fourth major donor and Australia is the fifth, according to an updated list of donor countries published by OCHA. Qatar seeks to continue its cooperation in the coming years to support the humanitarian programmes and initiatives launched by the OCHA.
Commenting on the occasion, H.E. Khalifa bin Jassim Al-Kuwari, Director General of Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) emphasized the State of Qatar’s efforts in responding to humanitarian crises and disasters and in supporting and strengthening partnerships with UN institutions and civil society organizations to co-ordinate humanitarian action and to facilitate sustainable solutions for developing countries.
Al-Kuwari noted that the State of Qatar’s ranking as the third donor country for OCHA in 2017 is a clear evidence of the pioneering role and efforts of the Qatari leadership to support humanitarian action and global justice and security.
Qatar supports the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to achieve the greatest impact of projects and to avoid duplication between the United Nations organizations and international donors, he added.
Al-Kuwari said, “Qatar seeks to complete its cooperation in the coming years and support the humanitarian programmes and initiatives launched by the OCHA. The support provided by Qatar is unconditional and it is not allocated to specific states or regions, but it is a substantial financing of United Nations operations, giving more flexibility to OCHA to act in various areas it deems appropriate and necessary.”
It is worth mentioning that the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) receives its contributions from a variety of donors, whose generous contributions allow supporting the ongoing activities of the Office. These contributions also help OCHA provide humanitarian services and develop innovative approaches to face the challenges of the global humanitarian community. (OCHA) manages these contributions to ensure that aid actually reaches those most in need, through coordination of humanitarian action, information management and humanitarian financing.
